Chronic Systemic Inflammation in Overweight and Obese Adults

Since this article does not have an abstract, we have provided the first 150 words of the full text and any section headings.

To the Editor: Dr Visser and colleagues1 reported elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) in otherwise healthy overweight and obese individuals, suggesting a state of chronic low-grade systemic inflammation. The authors, in their rationale for measuring CRP, cited studies showing an association between adipose tissue and the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin 6 (IL-6), but they did not measure serum concentrations of IL-6.

We have demonstrated a positive association between obesity and plasma IL-6 levels in humans.2 In this study, we also showed that IL-6 levels were significantly increased in middle-aged obese individuals with sleep apnea and suggested that IL-6 might play a role in mediating sleepiness and fatigue in these subjects. In a new controlled study that included 3 groups (normal weight control subjects, obese subjects without sleep apnea, and obese subjects with sleep apnea, the latter 2 groups matched for body mass index), we found that plasma concentrations of both . . .
