The US Army will soon have its 40th surgeon general. A successor is expected to be named momentarily for Ronald R. Blanck, DO, surgeon general since October 1996. Blanck will become president of the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Fort Worth, in mid August. Richard A. Nelson, MD, who became 33rd surgeon general of the US Navy in June 1998, also was to have retired this summer, but he has agreed to serve for another year. The remaining military surgeon general, Paul K. Carlton, Jr, MD, is completing his first year as 17th surgeon general of the US Air Force.
