An improved medical evacuation helicopter with more life-saving equipment and space to use it, greater flying range, sophisticated navigation and battle areascanning electronics, and an external hoist for litters will begin US Army service at Fort Hood, Texas, by year-end.
The Tennessee Army National Guard has been testing the upgraded UH-60Q Black Hawk, including rescue missions during 1999's Hurricane Floyd in North Carolina. Army medical units eventually hope to fly 282 of the rapid-rescue and patient-transfer craft.
