The health problems of women and children in developing countries will be the focus of a new global research network funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Both the foundation and the NICHD are committing $15 million over a 3-year period, beginning in early 2000.
The network will consist of teams of US scientists working in collaboration with researchers in developing countries on scientific and public health problems that require an interdisciplinary effort. Research will focus on biomedical, behavioral, and prevention research addressing the health needs of women, children, and adolescents in developing countries, although experts say the findings are also likely to benefit public health in the United States.
