Healthy People 2010 Initiative Launched

WashingtonUS health officials unveiled the third national preventive health initiative here last month at a conference called Partnerships for Health in the New Millennium: Launching Healthy People 2010.
The meeting opened with speeches by Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Donna Shalala and US Surgeon General David Satcher. Joining them were former DHHS Secretary Louis Sullivan and former US Surgeon General Julius Richmond, each of whom led earlier national initiatives during the last two decades (JAMA. 2000;283:37-38).
Calling the occasion historic, Shalala said, "We are issuing the first public health goals of the 21st century, our strategy for the next decade."
