Experts at last month's World Congress of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition in Boston said the need for multicenter networks of care is a main priority in improving the digestive and nutritional health of children throughout the world.

The congress brought together members of working groups that were established in 1998 to analyze 20 areas of major importance and develop recommendations for improvements in these areas. Working groups tackled such diverse topics as HIV disease, the genetics of gastrointestinal disorders, and the effects of political environments on growth and development. Their work is the foundation of A Global Plan for the Future of the Digestive and Nutritional Health of Children, the first global effort to define children's digestive and nutritional health worldwide and outline a 5-year plan of action.
