- David Y. Graham, MD, professor of medicine, Baylor College of Medicine, and chief of gastroenterology, Houston Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Houston, Tex, has received the 2000 Frank Brown Berry Prize in Federal Medicine for his pioneering work in the treatment and cure of Helicobacter pylori infection.
- Joseph G. Ouslander, MD, of Emory University School of Medicine, the Atlanta VA Medical Center, and Wesley Woods Center, all in Atlanta, Ga, has received the Polisher Research Institute Award (of the Philadelphia Geriatric Center) to honor his research contributions that have benefited older people.
- Kim B. Yancey, MD, senior investigator for the Dermatology Branch at the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Md, has been appointed chair of the Dermatology Foundation's Medical and Scientific Committee.
- James B. Peake, MD, a lieutenant general in the US Army, has been named the 40th surgeon general of the US Army. He succeeds lieutenant general Ronald R. Blanck, DO.
