2000 Albert Lasker Medical Research Awards

Six gleaming replicas of the Winged Victory of Samothrace now grace the homes of a half-dozen happy scientists who have received the 2000 Albert Lasker Medical Research Awards. The statuettes, along with honoraria and citations, were presented on September 22 in New York City to this year's recipients, who have contributed to "humankind's victory over disability, disease, and death."

BASIC MEDICAL RESEARCH AWARD

Two Israeli scientists and a third who was born in Russia have received this award "for the discovery and the recognition of the broad significance of the ubiquitin system of regulated protein degradation, a fundamental process that influences vital cellular events, including the cell cycle, malignant transformation, and responses to inflammation and immunity."
