  • Neil Swissman, MD, associate professor of anesthesiology at University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno, has been installed as president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
  • Paul Greengard, PhD, who is Vincent Astor Professor and head of the Laboratory of Molecular and Celluar Neuroscience at Rockefeller University, and Eric R. Kandel, MD, of the Center for Neurobiology and Behavior at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, both in New York City, have been awarded the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries involving signal transduction in the nervous system. The new laureates, both long-time grantees of the US National Institutes of Health, received the prize jointly with Arvid Carlsson, MD, of the University of Göteborg in Sweden.
