HIV Drug Resistance

Researchers at the 4th International Workshop on HIV Drug Resistance and Treatment Strategies in Sitges, Spain, reported last month that more than one fourth of patients with HIV infection in a new study had viral resistance to all three classes of HIV drugs now on the market.

The study included nearly 12,000 US-based patients who were studied during 1999. Data showed that 27% of the patients had virus that was resistant to all three classes of HIV drugs, 29% had virus resistant to two classes of drugs, and 22% had virus resistant to a single class. That left only 22% who had virus sensitive to all three classes.

Further analysis of the data showed that 12% of the patients were infected with a strain of virus that has a mutation at codon 333 in the reverse transcriptase gene that facilitates resistance to zidovudine and lamivudine. The researchers noted . . . [Full Text of this Article]
