A new international network will develop and test promising strategies for preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS, the NIH announced last month at the 13th International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa.
The HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) will focus on six areas of prevention research aimed at blocking or reducing HIV infection: drugs that prevent mother-to-child transmission; microbicides designed for vaginal and/or rectal use, to prevent sexual transmission; interventions to reduce high-risk behaviors; programs to curb HIV spread related to injection drug use; measures to control other sexually transmitted diseases; and antiretroviral therapy to protect high-risk uninfected adults and victims of sexual assault.
The network comprises a core group/operations center, a central laboratory, and a statistical and data coordinating center (all in the United States), as well as research sites in Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, and the United States.
