- Arnold J. Levine, PhD, president of Rockefeller University in New York City and Robert and Harriet Heilbrunn Professor of Cancer Biology at that institution, is the first-ever winner of the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research. Levine codiscovered the p53 protein, a widely studied tumor suppressor gene. He received the prize, which with an award of $500 000 is the largest prize of its type offered in the United States, at a ceremony at the New York Academy of Sciences last month.
- Neil Swanson, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Dermatology and professor of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University School of Medicine, has been elected vice president of the American Academy of Dermatology.
