Medical Societies Unite Against Firearm Injuries

In the high-stakes game of firearm issue advocacy, there is a new player at the table. Doctors Against Handgun Injury (DAHI) is a coalition of 13 medical societies organized by the New York Academy of Medicine. Jeremiah A. Barondess, MD, president of the New York Academy of Medicine and Professor Emeritus of Clinical Medicine at Cornell University Medical College, estimated in a recent interview that two thirds of the physicians in the United States belong to one or more of these medical societies. "Physicians have a justifiable role, even an obligation, to consider what the role of medicine and public health should be" in the prevention of firearm injury, he said.
