Best Acne Treatment Elusive

Brian Vastag

JAMA. 2001;285:2439.

Since this article does not have an abstract, we have provided the first 109 words of the full text and any section headings.

After a half-century of trying everything from Accutane to zinc, dermatologists still don't know which acne treatments work best. The problem lies with the dearth of studies directly comparing treatments, said Harold P. Lehmann, MD, PhD, a Johns Hopkins pediatrician and an author of Management of Acne, a thorough review (available at http://www.ahrq.gov/clinic/acnesum.htm) of the literature funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

After sorting through 250 studies of 150 acne drugs, the authors concluded that better research standards are needed. Lehmann said he will work with members of the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Academy of Dermatology to create such standards.
