HIV Care in South Africa

The International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (IAPAC) has announced plans to help deliver enhanced care for patients with HIV infection in South Africa.

The organization is developing a not-for-profit managed care carve-out program of enhanced HIV care with a $7 monthly premium. IAPAC officials said that among South Africa's population of 42 million, about 7.5 million people have health insurance. Some enrollees will be covered by insurers; employers will pay the premium for others; and some people may be able to pay out of pocket. Services in the enhanced care package include voluntary counseling and testing, immune status monitoring, prophylaxis for opportunistic infections, and antiretroviral therapy.
