Mike Mitka

JAMA. 2001;285:2571.

Since this article does not have an abstract, we have provided the first 150 words of the full text and any section headings.

Successful health initiatives and quality improvement efforts are showcased in the second edition of Quality Profiles: In Pursuit of Excellence in Managed Care.

The book was published May 1 by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), with support from Pfizer Inc. A panel of experts selected 21 quality improvement studies from a pool of more than 1100 studies submitted to the NCQA as a part of the accreditation process. The NCQA is a private nonprofit organization "dedicated to improving health care quality."

Each featured study includes information about how the initiative was selected, planned, and implemented. It also contains details on measuring baselines and setting goals and the specific interventions used to improve plan performance. Also included are details about staffing requirements, timelines, and required resources.

The initiatives address areas such as diabetes care management, breast cancer screening, childhood immunizations, medical management of depression, and member satisfaction.
