Calling on federal health agencies to work with states and the private sector, Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Secretary Tommy Thompson has announced a new patient safety task force, whose first charge is to identify the data health care professionals need to improve patient safety. The task force will also study the feasibility of a universal Internet-based safety reporting system. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality leads the effort, with input from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Health Care Financing Administration. The DHHS has requested $72 million for patient safety efforts in the fiscal year 2002 budget, an increase of $15 million over the 2001 allocation.
