  • Robert Austrian, MD, who is John Herr Musser Professor and chairman emeritus of the Department of Research Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, will receive the Maxwell Finland Award for Scientific Achievement from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. The award recognizes Austrian's lifelong devotion to research aimed at conquering pneumococcal pneumonia.
  • Bruce E. Spivey, MD, clinical professor of ophthalmology at Cornell University Weill Medical College and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, both in New York City, has been elected president of the Council of Medical Specialty Societies. Karl K. Wallace, Jr, MD, emeritus professor of radiology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Charlottesville, is president-elect; Gerald B. Holzman, MD, vice president of education of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, is secretary; and Lanny R.
