Patients' Point of View in Heart Failure Trials

To the Editor: Randomized clinical trials are the gold standard for assessing new therapeutic strategies in heart failure, but little is known about the perspectives of the patients participating in these trials.1-3 We sought to examine patients' motivation for participating in clinical trials, their comprehension of the trial's purpose, their perceived clinical benefit, and their interest in participating in future clinical trials.
Methods
We obtained data from 70 of 78 (90%) consecutive patients (median [SD] age, 64 [9] years; 62 men, 8 women) who responded to an anonymous questionnaire3 1 to 6 months after participating in 1 of the following consecutively conducted heart failure trials in our institution: 34 in the Mortality Assessment in Congestive Heart Failure (MACH-1) study (T-channel calcium blocker mibefradil),4 10 in the Israel Carvedilol Uniarm Study (ICARUS),5 4 in the REACH-1 study (endothelin antagonist bosentan),6 6 in the CASCO study (calcium sensitizer MCI-154 for COngestive heart failure), . . .
