Prediction of 6-Month Mortality Among Older Hospitalized Adults

Since this article does not have an abstract, we have provided the first 150 words of the full text and any section headings.

To the Editor: Walter et al1 recently validated a prognostic index for mortality in older adults after hospitalization. We repeated their study in a sample of elderly hospitalized patients aged 75 years or more consecutively admitted to our acute care for the elderly medical unit (ACE-MU) during a 16-month period.

Methods

Our ACE-MU is similar to that described by Landefeld et al.2 Approximately 70% of patients are admitted through the emergency department and 30% after an outpatient clinic visit. A multidimensional evaluation, including information on demographics (ie, age, sex, education, living site prior to admission and after discharge, living conditions, and caregiver or formal support availability), cognitive and affective status, physical health, and functional abilities, was performed on the first day after admission by a trained staff of geriatricians using a standard protocol. The sample comprised 840 consecutive patients. Mortality at 6 months was our primary outcome measure.
