Internet Use Among Physicians, Nurses, and Their Patients

To the Editor: The Internet has the potential to change health systems and the patient-physician relationship radically,1 but few studies have compared the use of the Internet by different groups of people involved in health-related decisions. We report a study comparing the use of the Internet by patients with cancer and by the physicians and nurses involved in their care, during the same time period at the same institution.

Methods

Between July 1998 and January 2000 we surveyed all physicians, nurses, and patients who had been affiliated with the Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre, Hamilton, Ontario. We surveyed 3 randomly selected groups of patients at 6-month intervals. The survey followed a modified Dillman method,2 with questionnaires mailed to patients, followed by additional copies sent twice over a 4-week period and telephone calls 6 weeks after the initial mailing to nonrespondents.
