Richard Klausner, MD, director of the National Cancer Institute since 1995, resigned on September 30 after steering the agency through a huge budget increase. The agency received $2.2 billion in fiscal year 1996 and is expected to receive more than $4 billion in 2002.
Klausner will become president of the Case Institute of Health, Science and Technology, a new philanthropic enterprise launched by the Case Foundation, founded by Steve Case, chair of AOL Time Warner. Klausner will maintain a "volunteer" laboratory at the National Institutes of Health. A replacement has not yet been named.
