The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has released more than $20 million in grants for mental health and substance abuse services to eight states and the District of Columbia following the September 11 terrorist attacks. DHHS Secretary Tommy Thompson said that the grants "help meet the enormous human needs for counseling, support, and recovery."
The grants from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration are the second wave of mental health funding made available under an emergency appropriation, part of $5.1 billion in disaster-related funds released September 21.
