San Francisco—Two years ago, when a group of experts decided to organize the first international scientific conference on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), they weren't sure if a call for abstracts would yield any valid data or attract enough participants to fill a conference hall.

"I did not think that we would get 50 or 100 abstracts, or that we would find any that were worthy of presentation orally," said David Eisenberg, MD, of Harvard Medical School. Still, the organizers persevered. When the conference met here in May, 223 (68%) of the 327 abstracts received by last January were presented—23 orally and 200 as posters. More than 400 participants who crowded the conference room represented 14 countries and 45 of the 50 US states.

Eisenberg said the turnout, in terms of scientific studies and interested clinicians, demonstrates that CAM is being taken seriously in the biomedical world. . . . [Full Text of this Article]
