Mike Mitka

JAMA. 2001;286:2534.

Since this article does not have an abstract, we have provided the first 149 words of the full text and any section headings.

The Primer on the Rheumatic Diseases, 12th edition, is now available at bookstores or through the Arthritis Foundation.

The foundation calls the primer "a definitive resource text on more than 100 forms of arthritis and related diseases," and notes that nearly 43 million Americans have some form of arthritis. The new edition includes:

  • a guide to arthritis drugs, with information on dosage and adverse effects for more than 250 medications, including newly approved ones;
  • a new guide to herbal supplements being taken for arthritis, with current research data on these increasingly common "nutraceuticals" and other alternative treatments; and
  • new or expanded chapters on osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, genetics of arthritis, pain management, and juvenile arthritis.

Books can be ordered from the Arthritis Foundation at (800) 283-7800 or through its Web site at http://www.arthritis.org. The book costs $69.95 and can also be purchased at bookstores or through online booksellers.
