Cambridge, Mass—Health care leaders from two vastly different countries, each with a medical system in transition, met here this summer to share their experiences and talk about successes and failures in an effort to learn from each other and help each other craft solutions to their problems.

The week-long conference, "Health Care, East and West, Moving Into the 21st Century," was organized by Harvard Medical International, a nonprofit subsidiary of Harvard University that promotes international health care initiatives (http://www.hms.harvard.edu/hmi/), and the Chinese Medical Association, with support from Johnson & Johnson. More than 600 Chinese delegates and an equal number of representatives from the United States attended. In addition to physicians, they included health care policy leaders and scientists.
