HIV Vaccine Study Nixed

Citing poor results from a phase 2 study, the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) announced that it will not pursue a widely anticipated phase 3 study of two AIDS vaccines. The trial was to have been a three-armed study to test Aventis Pasteur's ALVAC-HIV and VaxGen's AIDSVAX B/B alone and in combination. (The HVTN, funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, cooperates with pharmaceutical firms and nonprofit organizations in clinical testing of HIV vaccines via a global research network.)

"The data indicate that the T-cell responses do not meet the stringent standards of the . . . trial design," said Laurence Corey, MD, principal investigator of the HVTN. "We hope to continue testing this and other ALVAC vaccines to determine whether they are more immunogenic in different doses, in different populations, and in combination with other candidate HIV vaccines."
