Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) have found evidence that "sweaty palms" syndrome is genetic and not just a response to stress-related events. The findings appear in the February issue of the Journal of Vascular Surgery.
The researchers said hyperhidrosis is underreported and that as much as 5% of the US population may be affected. Previously, less than 1% of the population was thought to have hyperhidrosis and those with the syndrome were not taken seriously by the medical community, the researchers said.
The researchers took detailed family histories from 49 patients with hyperhidrosis and found that 65% reported family recurrence of the disorder vs 0% in the control group.
