Rethinking Treatment for Patients With Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease

Atlanta—Many patients with diabetes know about complications such as blindness and amputation while remaining unaware of the greater life-threatening risks of heart disease and stroke.

New findings presented at the American College of Cardiology's (ACC) Annual Scientific Session emphasize the risk of heart disease for these patients and offer some hope that advances in prevention and therapy will improve the health and survival of those with diabetes.

John Buse, MD, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, speaking on behalf of the American Diabetic Association at the ACC meeting, cited a survey that found that 68% of people with diabetes failed to identify cardiovascular disease as a serious threat to their health.
