In the ongoing marathon of my professional career, I jogged past another milestone yesterday—I completed my latest emergency medicine recertification examination. Using the authorized No. 2 pencil, I carefully filled in a bunch of little circles, hoped that they were the correct ones, handed the answer sheet to the proctor, and drove off quickly into a New Jersey sunset. Yesterday was the 22nd anniversary of my relationship with the American Board of Emergency Medicine, which makes me an undisputed veteran of the academic wars.

Twenty years ago, I was a freshly minted graduate of a residency in a freshly minted specialty—ready and eager to run the race.
