Chicago—Professionals concerned about quality in health care delivery heard the latest in November from leaders in the field at the National Conference on Quality and Safety in Health Care. The meeting was cosponsored by Joint Commission Resources (of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations [JCAHO]) and the National Patient Safety Foundation.

Uwe Reinhardt, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Economics at Princeton University, described in his keynote speech the "financial flow in health care" that fosters high quality. He referred to dollars spent not only to improve care delivery but on research and the search for error. To draw attention to problems in health care, he said, commenting on the 1999 Institute of Medicine report, To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System, "sometimes you have to use a 2 x 4."
