The FDA's Nonprescription and Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory Committees will hold a meeting on June 21 to consider proposed over-the-counter use of Prilosec (omeprazole magnesium, AstraZeneca LP/Procter and Gamble) for the prevention of symptoms of frequent heartburn. The committees will consider whether OTC buyers are likely to use the drug preventively rather than to seek immediate relief, an indication for which it is not effective. The FDA's Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE) Advisory Committee will meet on June 26-27 to discuss two issues: a draft guidance on preventive measures to reduce possible risk of transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and variant CJD by human cells, tissues, and cellular and tissue-based products; and validation of procedures to prevent contamination and cross-contamination by TSE agents of human tissue intended for transplantation. . . .
