  • Christopher Harris, MD, a pediatric pulmonologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn, has been elected president of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association. Richard V. Riggs, MD, chair and medical director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, is vice president; Barbara A. Shagawat, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist with Kaiser Permanente in Cleveland, Ohio, is secretary; Melinda Muller, MD, an internist with Legacy Portland Hospital, Portland, Ore, is treasurer; and Arlene M. Vernon, MD, an emergency medicine specialist with St Mary Medical Center, Long Beach, and Little Company of Mary Hospital, Torrance, both in California, is president-elect.
  • Richard D. Klausner, MD, former director of the National Cancer Institute and newly appointed adviser on counterterrorism at the National Academies, Washington, DC, has been selected to receive the first Walther Prize, named for Joseph E. Walther, MD, an award for conducting or fostering significant cancer research.
