Investing in Health, Investing in Our Common Future

In January 2000, I established the Commission on Macroeconomics and Health (CMH) to examine the place of health in global economic development. It is an issue of critical importance to our common future. I asked the Commission to look at the relationships among investing in health, economic development, and poverty reduction and to analyze the causal links. In December, the commission presented its final report to me.

Macroeconomics and Health: Investing in Health for Economic Development, presents evidence that increased spending on health makes sound economic sense, as well as arguing that current spending is grossly inadequate.

Fifteen years ago, I chaired the World Commission on Environment and Development; it succeeded in putting people firmly at the center of development.

By establishing the CMH, I sought to better define the place of health—particularly the health of poor people—within development. The commission's report provides a road map . . . [Full Text of this Article]
