Two months after my surgery, I returned to New Orleans to begin my second year of medical school. The recovery itself was not as bad as I had expected, but I was not ready to dive into pathology and pharmacology. I spent the first month wishing for a parachute, wondering if I was ready to make the leap from hospital room to classroom. By the end of each day, I was totally drained. I was told to expect some depression following surgery, but after several months my feelings of aimlessness had become a way of life. My goal had always been to attend medical school, despite the fact that in my dreams I never saw myself as a practicing physician. For the first time in my life, I did not have a clear-cut plan.
