The Senate voted to confirm Mark B. McClellan, MD, PhD, as the new director of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Although he has no regulatory experience, McClellan most recently served as a member of President Bush's Council of Economic Advisors, helping the administration form health care policies.

At his hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, McClellan vowed to speed approval of new drugs and devices while maintaining a commitment to health and safety.

Committee chair Edward Kennedy (D, Mass) expressed concern about McClellan and about the Bush administration stacking FDA advisory panels with "people with questionable credentials." McClellan said that he would never appoint unqualified advisors; he quickly followed that statement by saying that "a diversity of opinions" is needed on the panels.
