AIDS Knowledge Gap

While most people in developing countries have heard of HIV/AIDS, a
significant number have limited knowledge of how to prevent infection, according
to a new United Nations (UN) report, HIV/AIDS: Awareness
and Behaviour. The 30-page report may be purchased online (for $5)

The report examined data from a survey of 39 nations in Africa, Asia,
and Latin America. In nearly all the countries surveyedincluding those
where HIV prevalence is highthe majority of people questioned said
they believed that they were not at risk of contracting HIV infection. At
least two thirds of females and about 80% of males surveyed said they were
at little or no risk of infection.
Consequently most people were not changing their sexual behaviors, despite
the fact that many of those surveyed live in counties where up to one in five
