HIV Prevention Apathy?

Rising levels of gonorrhea, syphilis, and sexually acquired HIV infections
in western Europe since 1995 suggest that people and governments may have
become complacent about prevention efforts, according to a new study by researchers
in England and France (BMJ. 2002;324:1324-1327).
The researchers found that newly diagnosed cases of sexually acquired
HIV infections increased by 20% in the 10 western European countries collaborating
with the European Centre for the Epidemiological Monitoring of AIDS between
1995 and 2000. During that time, surveillance centers and other sources also
reported increases in gonorrhea and syphilis infections.
These preliminary data indicate that sexual health has worsened in parts
of western Europe and suggest that people may be increasingly likely to engage
in risky sexual behavior, the researchers said. "Since increasing numbers
