Clinical immunologists have two excellent reference textbooks to choose
from: Clinical Immunology: Principles and Practice,
edited by Rich et al, and Samter's Immunologic Diseases. Both are weighty, two-volume multiauthor reference texts that cover
the broad field of clinical immunology in depth.
Clinical Immunology, now in its second edition,
is the newer of the two. It is written for practicing physicians: specialists,
generalists, and even residents. Knowing that the field can be intimidating
to nonexperts, the authors and editors have taken pains to make the text clinician-friendly.
Each chapter includes a highlighted box summarizing the "Key Concepts" of
the chapter. Chapters covering basic science topics have a box highlighting
"Clinical Relevance." Disease-oriented chapters include highlighted boxes
on "Therapeutic Principles" or "Clinical Pearls."
The page layout is pleasing to the eye and easy to use. Each chapter
