Java Junkies and Reduced Type 2 Diabetes Risk

People who load up on coffee may have a reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to new findings by researchers in the Netherlands (Lancet. 2002;360:1477-1478).
During the prospective study of more than 17 000 Dutch men and women aged 30 to 60 years, 306 new cases of type 2 diabetes were found during nearly 126 000 person-years of follow-up. The investigators found, after adjusting for factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and body mass, that people who drank at least seven cups of coffee a day were half as likely to develop type 2 diabetes as less frequent coffee drinkers who consumed no more than two cups a day.
The researchers said that in view of coffee's widespread use and the substantial health burden of type 2 diabetes, the finding of an inverse association between coffee consumption and type 2 diabetes could have important public health . . . [Full Text of this Article]
