The first edition of this magnum opus was published six years ago. The editors note that all the original chapters have been updated, and a significant number of new chapters have been added.
Important additions include major advances in the use of minimally invasive video-assisted techniques and advances in positron emission tomography scanning and ultrasound. Special attention is given to the currently emphasized multimodality therapy in the management of many thoracic malignancies, including locally advanced lung and esophageal carcinomas. Lung volume reduction surgery and three-field lymphadenectomy for esophageal cancer are well covered. New operative techniques for the management of difficult technical problems, such as resection and reconstruction of the pulmonary artery and superior vena cava, are also covered.
