The Department of Health and Human Services has awarded $11.4 million
in new grants to improve services for children and adolescents exposed to
traumatic events. As part of the National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative,
the grants support a network of centers nationwide. The centers will collect
clinical data, provide resources for health care professionals, and build
public education programs.
Funded through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration,
the centers will develop treatments appropriate for children exposed to or
experiencing violence, traumatic loss of family members, sexual assault and
abuse, medical trauma, natural and human-caused disasters, and war. Special
emphasis has been placed on services for children in schools, the juvenile
justice system, and the child welfare and protective service systems.
