- Donald A. (D. A.) Henderson, MD, director of the federal Office of Public Health Preparedness and leader of the successful global effort to eradicate smallpox, has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
- Robert O. Bonow, MD, who is Goldberg Professor of Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, has been elected president of the American Heart Association. Augustus O. Grant, MD, PhD, codirector of the Heart Station at Duke University and professor of medicine at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC, is AHA president-elect.
