For more than 50 years Hale Aspacio Woodruff (1900-1980) juggled his life between art and teaching. As an accomplished artist and as a dedicated teacher he struggled to find time for both and never seemed to have enough time for either. He loved teaching and credited it with helping him to become a better artist; by the same token, becoming a better artist made him a better teacher. In either case, his work was influenced by African art and reflects the African American experience.
