To the Editor: Drs Hu and Willett1 state that "in 1908, Ignatowski produced atherosclerosis in rabbits with a diet high in cholesterol and saturated fat." Ignatowski is credited with having suggested that there could be a possible connection between foods rich in cholesterol and experimental atherosclerosis. But the credit for having produced atherosclerosis in rabbits in 1913 by feeding them a cholesterol-rich diet goes to Anichkov and Chalatov.2 Their results were not accepted universally as being relevant to human disease since cholesterol is not a normal constituent of the rabbit's diet.
