Simply stated, the mission of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is to improve the health and health care of all individuals in the United States. The nation's largest philanthropic foundation devoted entirely to health issues, RWJF strives to realize its goals by tackling knotty, complex problems, such as how to provide health insurance at a reasonable cost for all. To this end, the foundation funds a wide array of research, health policy, and education efforts to improve health care systems and conditions that promote health, distributing $450 million in grants each year.
At the helm of this well-endowed foundation is Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, MD, MBA, who became the president and chief executive officer in January 2003. The first woman to head the Princeton, NJbased foundation, Lavizzo-Mourey is a geriatrician who first joined RWJF in 2000 to serve as senior vice president and director of the health care group. . . .
