To the Editor: Dr Cohen's argument¹ is a lobbying effort to persuade the reader and the government to accept quotas as a basis for admission to medical school. As a longtime medical educator and department chair at a medical school, I find the idea of a quota system counterproductive to the mission of providing the best medical care available to the patients under our care and under the care of those we train.

When I or someone in my family needs a physician's care, I want that individual to be the very best person available. I do not want that physician to be someone who was admitted to medical school only because of the need to satisfy a quota. I believe all patients desire those same qualifications for their physician, namely that he or she was admitted to medical school because they were the best-qualified candidates for admission.
