Consequences of Selling a Kidney in India

Since this article does not have an abstract, we have provided the first 113 words of the full text and any section headings.

To the Editor: Dr Goyal and colleagues1 found that the fee paid to kidney donors in India was insufficient to lift them out of poverty. This is not a surprising finding and is certainly not unique to kidney donation. The financial impact of a monetary reward will depend on its amount in relation to the extent of the donor's debt and also on the donor's ability to manage his or her finances. It is likely that members of any impoverished group would fail to improve their financial condition if they were suddenly given a sum of money without any guidance or assistance in managing it.
