Pharmacist Care for Reactive Airway Disease

To the Editor: Dr Weinberger and colleagues1 identified areas of improvement to maximize pharmacists' contributions in helping patients with asthma manage their disease. On behalf of the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA)—the national society of pharmacists—we are disappointed in the study and its results. We believe the primary value of the study is its demonstration of the need for aligning incentives and practice patterns to improve patient care.

We are concerned that the study may be misinterpreted as discounting the value of pharmacists working with patients to improve medication use. The study illustrates that pharmacists cannot effectively help patients with asthma when they receive insufficient training and operate without incentives or without restructuring their practice.
