The JNC 7 Hypertension Guidelines

To the Editor: The JNC 7 report1 states that "adoption of healthy lifestyles by all individuals is critical for the prevention of high BP and an indispensable part of the management of those with hypertension." The report suggests a number of dietary strategies along with weight reduction and aerobic physical activity as appropriate lifestyle modifications to manage hypertension. It goes on to suggest that "combinations of 2 or more lifestyle modifications can achieve even better results." Despite these assertions, the report does not include recommendations for mind-body medicine and stress management, for which at least moderate evidence exists to show effectiveness in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. There is at least moderate evidence that mind-body medicine and stress management can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.2
